#OnThisDay 1 December 1820 Governor Macquarie marked out the site for the new settlement of Campbelltown in southwestern Sydney, on Dharawal land. The town was named Campbell-Town, after Elizabeth Macquarie's maiden name.
In 1827 the first measured plans of the town were drawn up but it was another four years until the first settlers were allowed to take up possession of their land. Campbelltown Council was incorporated in 1882.
