#OnThisDay 2 January 1822 a penal settlement was established at Macquarie Harbour in Van Dieman's Land for twice convicted convicts. Only those convicts who reoffended were sent to this harsh and isolated settlement. Macquarie Harbour Penal Station closed in 1833 and was replaced by Port Arthur.
