#OnThisDay 2 February1803 the Surveyor General, Charles Grimes, sailed up the Yarra River in present day Melbourne. On his return to Sydney on 7 March he reported unfavourably about the future settlement at Port Phillip.

Appointed Deputy Surveyor General of roads, Norfolk Island in 1790 and head constable in 1792. He returned to Sydney in 1794 and became a magistrate and superintendent of public concerns at Parramatta the following year.
He became Surveyor General in 1801; explored the Yarra River 1803; returned to England 1804-6; joined the rebels in 1808 and was forced to resign 1811.
