#OnThisDay 25 July 1839 Henry Parkes arrived in Sydney on the Strathfieldsaye. The entry in the shipping list shows that he was 24 years old and a turner. His wife, Clarinda was 23 and a dressmaker.
Henry Parkes served five terms as NSW Premier between 1872 and 1891. He became known as the Father of Federation and made his famous speech, the Tenterfield Oration, in October 1889, urging the creation of "a great national Government for all Australia".
