#OnThisDay 16 March 1826 the Australian Subscription Library was founded in Sydney. The Library opened its doors on 1 December 1826 in Pitt Street, Sydney. By 1869, the Library was in serious in debt and was bought by the State Government. It became the Sydney Free Public Library, the forerunner of the State Library. An Archives Department was created within the Public Library in 1953.
