#OnThisDay 22 December 1866 the Public Schools Act of NSW was assented to. The new Act abolished the dual system of the Board of National Education and the Denominational School Board. A Council of Education was created to maintain state schools that were spreading through the state as more towns were established. The Act also reduced the government aid that was available to Church schools.
