#OnThisDay 26 October in 1811 William Charles Wentworth was appointed to the post of Acting Provost Marshal by Governor Macquarie. The Provost Marshal was a military officer in charge of the military police.
William Wentworth arrived in New South Wales as an infant, on the Surprize in 1790, with his mother Catherine Crawley. She had been convicted in the Staffordshire Assizes and transported to New South Wales for seven years.
Explorer, author, barrister, landholder, Wentworth is known for being one of the first British settlers, alongside William Lawson and Gregory Blaxland, to successfully cross the Blue Mountains in 1813.
