#OnThisDay 31 December 1790, with the new Colony facing starvation, twenty-five bushels of barley were successfully harvested. Governor Phillip faced many difficulties in the first few years when it came to feeding the Colony. Many of the convicts had no farming knowledge and the tools and seeds brought over from England were unsuitable for the new conditions.
