#OnThisDay 6 February 1794 Captain John Hunter was appointed to replace Captain Arthur Phillip as Governor. Phillip had been granted leave on 10 December 1792 and returned to England, leaving Captain Francis Grose as the Acting Governor.
Hunter first came to New South Wales in 1788 as second captain, under Governor Phillip, on the "Sirius" and returned to England in 1792. He came back to the Colony a second time to serve as Governor from 11 September 1795 to 27 September 1800. He he sailed home to England soon after on the "Buffalo", arriving at Spithead on 24 May 1801.
