This list is designed to convey some idea of the scope and diversity of the Colonial Secretary's duties during these years in the absence of a complete administrative history. It may not be complete. Some of the duties he held for the entire period, others for only part of it (see also Colonial Secretary Special bundle: Administrative Arrangements, 1856-84, [4/826]). Beside the functions specifically assigned to him, he was responsible for all matters of internal arrangement not confided to any other minister.
